Safety is NO Accident: the importance of protective eyewear
The following excerpts are taken from the NYSOA's monthly newsletter, PROSPECTUS.
"Each year in the United States, there are approximately 600,000 documented sports-related eye injuries. Of these, roughly
72 percent occur in individuals younger than 25 years, and 43 percent in those younger than 15 years. ...
"Upwards of 90 percent of sports eye injuries can be prevented through the proper use of protective eyewear,"
said Renee Mika, OD, Chair of the Vision Care Section at the American Public Health Association (APHA)."
At eyevolution we recommend impact-resistant lenses for all children's eyewear,
and carry recreational eyewear from Liberty Sports, HILCO, Julbo & Rudy Project to protect our patient's vision.
Regardless of your chosen sport, there is an appropriate frame for you that will allow you better performance and ensure the
protection of your eyes.

Insurance companies with no vision...benefits.
Many people forego annual eye exams and place themselves at risk of losing precious sight to conditions like glaucoma and
retinal detachment just because they believe their insurance doesn't have a vision benefit. I find this thinking ludicrous.
First off, we're talking about your vision, what price are you willing to spend to save your eyesight?
Secondly, even if your medical insurance does not have a "Vision Benefit", it will still cover a medical evaluation
of your eyes if you are experiencing any symptoms, or have a family history of vision-affecting disease or disorder.
Many systemic conditions can and will affect the eyes, including hypertension, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoid,
and of course diabetes. The eye is also a favorite site for secondary tumors and can even be a site for primary
melanomas. The following link is to an interview with noted author and Columbia University professor, Oliver Sacks,
whose most recent book, "The Mind's Eye" details several cases where vision is affected by neurological disease
as well as his own odyssey as patient when diagnosed with an ocular melanoma in 2005. My point is, take the appropriate
precautions and get an eye exam annually. The true "benefit" is maintaining your healthy vision.
